LGBTQ+ Allies Lake County hosted a gingerbread house decorating fundraiser, an inaugural event held to raise money to support the organization’s efforts.
“We needed something here in Lake County,” Jacobs said. “And no one was willing to help me start it or take on that responsibility… so I took it on.”
LGBTQ+ Allies Lake County offers safe space training, support groups, social events, and multiple programs to the community. In providing these services, Jacobs hopes to bring awareness and support to the LGBTQ+ community.
“I’ve always said that I wanted to be moldable when I started this organization,” Jacobs said. “So whatever the Lake County community asks for or needs, I’m willing to figure out how we can get it.”
According to the organization’s website, LGBTQ+ Allies Lake County is composed of members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as allies who reside in Lake County. By participating in the organization, individuals have been able to meet relatable people with similar backgrounds.
“When you find that connection, it changes everything. It changes…you’re not alone anymore,” Jacob said.
Blake Bishop, who identifies as male, has been a member of LGBTQ+ Allies Lake County since 2017. He expressed appreciation for the support that he and his mother, Valentine Bishop, have received from Jacobs and the organization.
“She was the one who started everything,” Blake, 14, said. “She has helped with finding friends and she’s helped my mom find support groups.”
Valentine Bishop, Blake’s mother, credits the organization for how much her son has grown since becoming members of LGBTQ+ Allies Lake County.
“You’re back to yourself,” Valentine said to her son. “You’re not hiding, and that’s how they helped you grow. To know that it’s okay, and that you’re accepted. We love you. And we know what they love us.”
On December 11, 2021, LGBTQ+ Lake County hosted a gingerbread house decorating contest. The proceeds collected from the inaugural event will help the organization to continue their programming.

“Without these fundraisers, and without people participating, this organization would not grow,” Valentine said. “It would not be there for people like you, like me, and we’re the only one in Lake County. There’s definitely a need.”
When hearing about the organization and its endeavors, Jacobs hopes that people will understand that the LGBTQ+ community is in need of their support.
